Tracking losses and damages from slow onset events
This issue-brief explore the challenges associated with and prospects to advance methodologies and approaches for comprehending the impact of slow-onset events (SOEs) induced by climate change must be explored to enable corrective action. By evaluating the current landscape, appraising associated challenges and exploring potential opportunities, it examines the viability of adapting existing methodologies for assessing losses and damages resulting from SOEs and processes.
The brief explores opportunities to utilize the enhanced disaster losses and damages tracking system being developed by UNDRR, UNDP and WMO for strengthening, over time, the understanding of the adverse impact of SOEs and enabling responses. Recognizing the issues and opportunities require further exploration, the brief identify a way forward through existing and new partnerships and capture how UNDRR plans to leverage opportunities and partnership to develop a more systemic framework for assessing losses and damages from SOEs
