Overview of youth-led disaster risk reduction initiatives activities and recommendations for future activities
The study investigates the reported impact and challenges faced by youth-led disaster risk reduction (DRR) activities through identifying themes in answers across activities to provide local and global recommendations for future youth-led activities. This study aims to expand limited information on youth-led activities, as well as recommendations on how to improve future youth-led activities. To this end, information on youth-led activities were solicited from the United Nations Major Group for Children and Youth (UNMGCY) DRR members list, which includes over 700 individuals, as well as the wider UNMGCY members list, which includes more than 6000 entities.
The study finds that there is a great potential for children and youth to impact DRR policy and practice on local and global levels. However, the work highlights several reported challenges facing youth-led activities. Overall, global stakeholders should realize that investments in children and youth activities may not manifest in immediate returns, but has the potential to contribute to gradual transformations as youth transition to making significant societal impacts.
